What’s a quote, word, or phrase that you use to guide you in your life? Why is this helpful for you?
A phrase I use to guide myself through life is, “take everything day by day”. This past year, being a freshman in college, I had many new opportunities that I was excited to involve myself in. However, with the excitement came the anxious thought that my life could change in response to a single moment or experience. I quickly began to realize that adjustment is key to living a fulfilling life. Things can change in any moment to any person, however, all someone can do is focus on the things that they are in control of and deal with life as it comes to them day by day. This mindset has allowed me to focus on my future goals and ambitions, as well as the exciting journey it will take to achieve them.

I’ve now developed the mindset that living a healthy lifestyle is about balancing time for both.

Cherish high school moments. Now that I have graduated, I would like to go back. Once you graduate, your life changes. However, it's essential to understand that change is okay and there is nothing wrong with changes. These changes will allow you to grow and learn more about yourselves on this road. The road is not easy, but you will overcome everything that may try to stop you.
What is your life purpose (why are you here...in this world)?
The world needs more understanding. With everything happening in the world, I can't help but wonder how collected and cordial life would be had each and everyone of us felt that someone made a true effort to try and understand us and the way we think and act. Understanding however, is needed in more than just society, we should all take the time to understand our environment, understand nature and all of life around us. The more open-minded and comprehensive we are with each other, the stronger of a connection we are able to form with the things around us. We should all do our part to try and make more connections everywhere we go by being slower to judge, and quicker to understand.

The scholarship provided me with a new way to go about not only the rest of my journey but life in general. My mentor who was once a complete stranger, provided me with a feeling that I had never felt prior to the scholarship. I now had someone I haven't known more than a year, in my corner, rooting for me every step of the way. This scholarship has made me want to radiate this same loving and supportive energy everywhere I go.

Junior and senior year can be very stressful, it becomes so easy to get overwhelmed and feel like you're not doing life right. There will be a lot of changes as you begin your journey into adulthood, it is okay to fail, but you keep trying until you get it right! Don't give up just because you don't feel that you are where you need to be. It's not about how you start, it's about how you finish. No matter how many times life knocks you off your feet, make your ultimate goal getting up and finishing.

The world needs more individuality. By that, I mean people who are willing to set themselves apart from others, even if it means losing some friends. People who are eager to break out of “life’s hamster wheel” and strive for greatness even if it means experiencing setbacks. People who are determined to change the narrative, even if it means not knowing what is next. This list can go on and on, but the principle stands firm. The world needs more people who are not afraid of being unique and challenging themselves to change and positively impact not only themselves but the world.

What advice would you give a high school senior or junior today?
As unusual as it may sound, I would tell them to fail their way to success. Here is why. As far as I know, there was not and is not a single successful person on earth that has not failed or endured some type of obstacles. People need to know that it is okay to fail and that failure does not equal the end. Failing equals another opportunity to get it right, with more knowledge than before. To me, what makes a successful person is not how much they have but how much they have overcome and how they overcame it.

2020 taught me...
I missed out on many important milestones during 2020: graduation, prom, and freshman year of college. The losses have given me the knowledge to take nothing for granted and to always look forward and never back. If we look back, we will always think of what we could have done instead of what we can do now.

What advice would you give a high school senior or junior?
Something I wish I didn’t do is wait. I would tell them to not wait for tomorrow to do a paper, to wait a week to apply for college, to wait to join a club. In high school, I kept telling myself that I had time, I had plenty of time to do things that would help me but as that time dwindled down, I realized that time goes by fast and that week I spent doing nothing could’ve amounted to volunteering, working, studying, making connections. Every day is precious and we should live it to the fullest extent by doing work and working not only on ourselves but on our future.

2020 taught me to care more than ever before. I’ve always cared for others; but during the pandemic I had to learn to care even more. I’d say if you’re not sure about what you want to do in your career/job, then that’s okay. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and learn as much about a career or job before going to college and majoring in that field. For me, I’m majoring in political science and hope to go to Law School, which seems like I’ve got my stuff together, but most people don’t and I definitely didn’t always.
What is your life's purpose (why are you here...in this world)?
My life's purpose is to be a role model and to be successful in the eyes of my family. Straight from the womb my parents have always pushed higher education. "We can't give you much, but what we can give you is the opportunity of a good education" is a saying my father would use very much and it continues to pull some of my heart strings. My parents have been nothing but supportive of me and are the reason I am where I am, and aim as high as I do. To not take advantage of the amazing contributions and sacrifices they have made would be a slap to the face. With their support getting through college is a must, and once done I will fulfill every promise made to my family and much more.
How has The 3:20 Scholarship impacted your life?
The 3:20 Scholarship has really won me over. When I applied I never thought I would win, and thought this was just another way to hopefully fund my college expenses. Months later at our senior banquet turns out I won, and as happy as I was to win the best part about the scholarship has been the people involved. This group has been so much more than money, sure $1,000 is great, but what has really opened me up is seeing how much they care. I always have Dr. Darrien checking up on me making sure I'm good, and staying on top of things. Sometimes certain topics can't be talked about openly and being able to have Dr. Darrien as someone to talk to is very impactful for me.

Alright so, Juniors if you plan on going to college, but don't know how to go about it or what school you want to attend get ready because senior year is going to be an emotional roller coaster. Please take your SAT or ACT asap and if you have waivers use them so you can get those applications done. If you're cool with Ms. Lines she's great and is more than willing to help, much love to her.
